Mitsubishi i MIEV Sport

Mitsubishi i MIEV Sport

by Mark Yannone

The aluminum-frame, two-passenger Mitsubishi i MIEV Sport has a solar roof, two compact wind turbines built into the front grill, and a regenerative braking system. A solar roof can add up to 20 miles per day to the car's range, for a total of 120 miles. Top speed is 108 mph.

Lithium-ion batteries stored underneath the passenger floor power two electric motors for the front wheels and one for the rear wheels. Recharge time is 14 hours using household current or 7 hours at 220 volts (80 percent in 30 minutes). Interior lights use energy stingy LEDs. Heat-absorbing window glass improves air conditioning efficiency. Interior components use Green Plastic--Mitsubishi Motors' plant-based resin technology.

Initial sales are intended for Japan, but Mitsubishi hopes to find a market in the US. (Hint for Mitsubishi: Develop a Web site so we can find your products, their descriptions and prices, and their specifications.)
